2 year olds are smart

Samuel loves to tell Hope what to do and boss her around. That's what big brothers are for, right? If she doesn't do what he wants her to do, big tears and tantrums follow. We've been working hard with Samuel and talking him through the whole fact that Hope doesn't *have* to do everything that he wants her to do. She can do other things, she can make her own decisions, he is not her boss, etc. We've been telling him that he has to ask her if she wants to do something, not tell her to do it. And then he needs to be okay with it if she doesn't want to do what he wants her to do. So this is how their conversation went this morning:

Samuel: Hopey want to go play downstairs?
Hope: Noooo
Samuel: Hopey want to go play downstairs?
Hope: Noooo
Samuel: Hopey wanna go downstairs? Hopey say "yes" (which sounds like les) or "no".
Hope: Noooo
Samuel: Hopey say "yes" (les)
Hope: Yes
Samuel (jumping up and down, excited and happy): Hopey say yes! Hope want to play downstairs!!

Ummmm, yeah. So much for that idea. He has totally turned the asking questions thing into manipulation.

Garrett: what's for supper, Mom?
Mom: Fish and chips
Jozina: Garrett, say, we're not having fish and chips for supper.
Garrett: But Mom just said we are having fish and chips.
Jozina: I know, but just say that we're not okay?
Garrett: We're not having fish and chips for supper.
Jozina: MOM! Garrett said we're not having fish and chips!!!
